Open Road by MJ O'Shea

Open Road - M.J. O'Shea

“What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart, oh, no, it's curved like a road through mountains.” ~ Tennessee Williams

Angus and Reece have been friends nearly all their lives. They are almost like one person. Before their friendship has time to bloom into something more mature, Angus meets Brad who is possessive and jealous, sensing that there's a lot more to their relationship than meets the eye. Brad does whatever he can to separate them, but their friendship persists. Even though Reece has realized he loves Angus by this time, he also respects his friend's choice and backs off. However, when Brad breaks Angus’s heart, Reece is there to pick up the pieces, help heal his friend's spirit. Reece decides the best way to do that is to get Angus away from the situation. He and Angus set out on a road trip, not only of driving and sightseeing, but a journey on the road toward a new focus on life and love.

When the trip begins in almost total silence, with a sullen Angus, Reece worries that maybe this isn't the right choice to help Angus forgive himself and get beyond the humiliation and disgrace of being dumped after devoting ten years to a man who was never capable of loving him to start with. Reece wants to tell Angus how much he loves him, but he puts his best friend's healing process before any seeming selfish feelings of his own. Reece is doing what he's always done, being patient and supportive, putting Angus's feelings before his own. As the trip continues, Reece sees positive signs of the old Angus, the pre-Brad man, coming back and is hopefully optimistic. Reece's forbearance and wisdom is phenomenal. He knows Angus must go through a grieving process before he has any chance of getting his life together and being able to move on. Reece hopes he will move on toward loving him, but it will be enough if Angus can just get through this self-destructive, depressive state he is in.

The trip starts off to be only a week, but, as they visit more places, they think of others that they would love to see. Some of them, Angus has experienced with Brad, but marvels at the difference between how things were with his ex and how they are with his best friend. It's not until Angus finally has an emotional meltdown of massive proportions that he begins to stop blaming himself and starts to truly let go of his past with Brad. After this, Angus's attitude begins to shift. He starts to entertain the idea that he not only loves Reece, but he's IN love with him; it's both scary and wonderful at the same time.

Angus and Reece's journey touched my heart in a profound way. I adored both characters from the start and truly hoped they would end up where they belonged - together. As friends they are phenomenal, but being lovers and partners made everything right with their world. It's sad, in a way, that it took them ten years to get to that point, but each one, especially Angus, had to reach the point where he was ready, while Reece showed him a love that few of us ever experience by waiting for him to reach that point. I enjoyed sharing the experiences they had during their trip and wished I could have been there as well—Vegas, Nashville, DC, New York, and other places. Even though I was reasonably sure they would end up together, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. If you like best-friends-to-lovers tales, road trips, visiting exciting places, and true love prevailing, you may enjoy this book. Thanks so much, MJ, for this touching and hopeful story!

Falling for You by Sara York

Falling For Him - Sara York

Tristan Barnes, of 'Falling for Him' by Sara York, has no social life. He's killing himself teaching college classes and trying to earn his master's degree so he doesn't have to start at the bottom rung of the ladder. Tristan really needs something, possibly someone, to distract him from the drudgery and loneliness of his work. Then Tristan gets on a campus only website, hoping to make a connection. Though he's never chatted with him, he's attracted to a user named SVS479. Tristan knows the hazards of hooking up online. The guy may not even be a guy at all. This could all be a game to SVS749 but, still, Tristan is willing to take a chance.

Their first conversation is a message to Tristan advising him to take better care of himself. It seems like an odd beginning, but Tristan is intrigued. SVS479's messages are oddly compelling, a mix of flirting and caring. Things get sexy really fast and their exchanges border on obscene yet remain totally anonymous. Even when he meets and is very attracted to a guy named Stefon, who happens to be in a wheelchair, he Tristan still fantasizes about his online lover; yet, over time, Tristan begins to think of Stefon more frequently. The next time he sees him, Tristan asks Stefon to go to a movie with him. Stefon is shocked that he asks but has to decline because he has a doctor's appointment. When Stefon explains why he can't go, Tristan immediately offers to go to his appointment with him and Stefon takes him up on it.

Stefon has been through so much since the accident that took away his ability to walk that he has trouble having faith in himself. He hates not being able to walk and hates that he has to depend upon others. It's difficult for him to adjust to Tristan's love and the faith he has in Stefon to be able to succeed. The thing is, if you don't believe in yourself, no one can do it for you. Stefon is beginning to realize that Tristan is completely different from many people he's known. Tristan is not going to bully, make fun of him, or use him just to brag about having sex with the cripple. Tristan has the ability to see beyond the chair and, as much as is possible, treats Stefon like anyone else. Stefon knows he needs to, but is terrified to tell Tristan that he is SVS479 about his big secret. Stefon is certain that Tristan will be furious and will walk away. And even with the new procedures Tristan talks him into trying and their seeming success, Stefon's hope of ever being normal again is fading. He's better in some ways, but the pain is so intense that it's wearing him down. Stefon's goal is to be able to walk again and it isn't happening fast enough. In a fit of frustration and anger, Stefon strikes out at Tristan, telling him to leave and never come back.

There's a lot going on in this story and it was a bit overwhelming at times. Sara put these guys through a lot and although they faced each challenge and came through it together each time, it was emotionally draining. Tristan was an angel. I loved him for being so compassionate and loyal to Stefon. Although I understood that Stefon had been through more than anyone, especially at his age, should have to go through, if his love interest had been anyone but Tristan I don't think it would have had a chance. If you like stories about college students, disabilities, bullying, recovery, and redemption you may enjoy this story. Thanks, Sara, for giving Tristan and Stefon their happy ending.

Two Silent Cries by TN Tarrant

Two Silent Cries - T.N. Tarrant

Life is challenging enough being deaf, but Micah Valerie, of TN Tarrant's 'Two Silent Cries', also suffers from severe anxiety attacks. His safety and security lies in the capable paws of his assistance dog, Goldie. When she begins to start missing clues, Micah starts to worry. Micah takes her to the vet where he meets Dr. Santiago Cruz. Their introduction happens in a very unconventional way - Dr. Cruz, not knowing about Micah's panic disorder, mistakenly thinks Goldie is attacking Micah and shoots Goldie with a tranquilizing dart.

Even though their meeting gets off to a rocky start, Santiago turns it all around by helping Goldie whose problem is incurable, but Santiago helps Micah obtain a new service dog and ensures that Micah can keep Goldie as well. He is soon a frequent visitor, assisting Micah in his daily life. Since Micah is hearing and vocally impaired, it's very convenient that Dr. Cruz is fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) as well. Rejected by his family at eighteen, Micah has never had anyone to help him take care of himself. Even though perfectly capable of doing so, having Santiago around is a comforting feeling. Goldie and Girlie, the puppy assistance dog, are as much a part of the group as Micah and Santiago are and the two kittens Santiago brings into the family only make it more complete. The warm fuzzies between them grow and they soon become lovers.

Santiago has his own problems. He was wounded in the service and has a bad case of PTSD that he's trying to handle by himself. When he starts staying overnight, Micah witnesses his bad, sometimes violent dreams and encourages him to seek help. Santiago still thinks he can handle it alone until one night when he breaks Micah's nose. Micah doesn't hold it against Santiago; he understands, but, instead of communicating his fear an inability to manage his illness alone, Santiago decides to remove himself from the situation entirely. All this does is make both of them and the animals miserable. Micah is at a loss as to how to bridge the gap between them. Unfortunately, the ball is in Santiago's court.

When I saw the cover and read the blurb for this story, I was intrigued, animals and deafness, how can I go wrong? I am very involved in animal care and have also studied ASL. It's a good story but in some ways it was too short and in others too long. Although, Santiago's knowledge of ASL was convenient, it's unusual for someone not associated with the deaf community to be fluent enough to be able to interpret, which Santiago did frequently for Micah. I do have to admit to my fingers “twitching” when ASL words or phrases were mentioned that I found both amusing and gratifying. My fingers remember even if I don't. Also, there's a lot going on that sometimes overshadowed Santiago and Micah's relationship with each other and the animals. It was difficult for me to feel the energy between Santiago and Micah like I hoped I would. Even though it wasn't quite what I expected, I still enjoyed the story and believe others will too. Thanks, TN, for dealing with the difficult topics of deafness and PSTD.

Happy Independence Day by Michael Rupured

Happy Independence Day - Michael Rupured

“When the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars… then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars... This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius... harmony and understanding; sympathy and trust abounding; no more falsehoods or derisions, golden living dreams of visions; mystic crystal revelation and the mind's true liberation.” ~ Fifth Dimension 'Hair' Aquarius

'Happy Independence Day' by Michael Rupured picks up at the end of ‘No Good Deed’, with Terrance in college and Harold, Phillip's most recent charge, just graduating from high school. The most important things in Terrance's life are to graduate from college and go to law school so he can be in a position to help the oppressed gain independence and respect. At this stage of his life, nothing is more important than achieving those goals. At least, that was the case until he sees Cameron, a handsome, rugged-looking young man across the room in the Stonewall Inn.

For Harold's high school graduation, Philip and his lover, George, give Harold and his best friend, Abigail, a trip to New York City and tickets to see the musical Hair. One of the things Terrance promises Harold is to take him to the Stonewall Inn, a rather run-down establishment, but, other than the token police raids that take place regularly with advanced notice, a safe haven of sorts for homosexuals. The police are paid off by the mob for this courtesy. Harold and his friend are in awe of all the sights and sounds they never would have experienced otherwise. Men dancing together, drag queens in full regalia, women dancing together, holding hands, and drinking, another “courtesy” secured by bribes, since it is against the law to serve liquor to homosexuals.

Cameron can't imagine anyone wanting to be with him in his current circumstances, especially a handsome young man like Terrance. Yet, when Terrance finally approaches him, he can't resist. A chance to be with Terrance is something Cameron doesn't want to miss. When Cameron and Terrance leave, they entrust Harold and Abigail to the care of his friends, Kremma De Kropp, drag queen extraordinaire, and Terrance’s lesbian buddy, Kelsey. It never occurs to Terrance that anything out of the ordinary might happen. However, he is wrong. It's a hot Saturday night and the club is more crowded than ever. When an unscheduled police raid takes place and the officers go beyond obligatory harassment to deliberate destruction of their safe haven, the crowd becomes hostile. Their backs are pushed up against a 'stone wall', and for the first time, they come back fighting.

Michael has done a great job of bringing the characters from the first book into the present of this story. Terrance may be the focus with his love interest being Cameron, but woven in with their romance are real historic events. Michael's writing is smooth and evenly paced. Even though I knew what would take place, I still couldn't put the book down. When I heard about the riots back in 1969, I was appalled that it took violence to achieve change, but I remember thinking: “It's about time to call for some respect.” Thanks, Michael, for the brilliant portrayal of Stonewall's legacy.

Cervena by Louise Lyons

Cervena - Louise Lyons

“Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have - life itself.” ~ Walter Anderson

People often tell Joel Jones of 'Cervena' by Louise Lyons that he's too softhearted; Joel often goes   out of his way to trust or help someone who needs it. When he takes Sasha in and gives him a job, a place to live, and, eventually, his heart, Joel does a good thing. But trusting his business partner, Karel, is one time when Joel's soft heart gets him into serious trouble. Not only does Karel betray him, but he also puts Joel and Sasha in danger because the money Karel lost gambling, he owes the mob.

When Joel returns from an emergency trip home to England, he finds that the man he trusted and called friend has almost completely bankrupted the nightclub they worked so hard to make a success. Joel is appalled at Karel's deliberate corruption of their business, taking it from a stylish, upscale club down to the level of the other sleazy, disreputable bars in town. Joel works quickly to try to undo what Karel has done, restoring the club back to the sophisticated level it was before he left. Joel is especially upset about the unfair treatment of his employees, Sasha in particular. Joel's relationship with Sasha had just begun when he left, and Sasha thought they had a good thing going, based on more than just sex; but after Karel told everyone Joel was not coming back, Sasha had basically given up on ever seeing him again. Fortunately, he and Joel are able to pick up the pieces and move forward with their relationship which continues to strengthen.

When the mob can't get the money Karel owes them, they go after Joel for the money. To give him more 'incentive' to pay, they threaten Sasha with harm if Joel doesn't pay up. Joel, now deeply in love with Sasha, will do almost anything to keep him from harm even if it involves selling Cervena. Even though Joel is scrambling as fast as he can, the mob becomes impatient and raises the stakes, charging interest on top of the amount Karel owed them. Since the threat made about hurting Sasha, Joel has kept him as close as possible, moving him into Joel's apartment, going to work together, basically not letting Sasha out of his sight. Even with all this vigilance, the bad guys manage to take him. Joel almost loses his mind - he has to have him back! Sasha is his heart now, the only thing that makes life worth living. Not having any other course of action, he makes a deal with the devil, turning to someone he's not at all sure he can trust, in order to ensure Sasha's return.

My favorite element of this story was Joel's character and strength. He has a compassion that others call a weakness. Joel has a great moral compass and always takes the high road. When he finds Sasha digging around in his trash, instead of sending him away, Joel brings him in and gives him a start on a new life. Also, Sasha is very attractive and Joel wants him almost right away, but does not approach him for fear that Sasha would feel “obligated” to have sex with him. Joel wants to make sure Sasha knows that is not the case and is delighted that Sasha feels the same way. In each other, they find something more precious than money or success, they find a deep abiding love. If you enjoy a fast-moving story filled with night club life, intrigue, angst, sex, betrayal, and love conquering all, you may enjoy this book. Thanks, Louise, for the intense, sexy read and, especially, for introducing me to Joel, who has become one of my favorite characters.

Town Man, Country Man by Jessica Skyes Davis

Town Man, Country Man - Jessica Skye Davies

“...no reason you and me should be alone tonight...you're who should take me home tonight...Right on the limits where we know we both belong tonight. It's hot to feel the rush...I'm on the edge of glory and I'm hanging on a moment of truth...I'm on the edge of something final...with you.” ~ Lady Gaga (I'm on the Edge)

When Josh and Ben, of 'Town Man, Country Man' by Jessica Skye Davies, leave their friends' wedding, they both sense that their encounter is going to be more than either has experienced in the past. One night together proves them right. They dive into a passionate, physical relationship that temporarily blinds them to the huge differences in lifestyles between them. All they can see at the moment, besides the passion, is a man they can relate to and be themselves with. Sooner or later, the reality of the situation is going to present itself. Then, they will have to decide if they will be able to compromise enough to keep their flame alive.

Although Josh sometimes complains about it, he enjoys his job as a wedding planner. He also loves being in the city where all the action is. But he has grown tired of one-night-stands and is beginning to look for something more permanent. When he and Ben begin seeing each other, it's like a dream come true. Even though they are very different, they appreciate each other's way of life and find merit in them. Their sex life is especially good, only adding to the positives. Finding common interests further binds them together. Josh and Ben are comfortable together for now and don't need to consider a more permanent solution.

As they spend more time at each other's houses, Josh start to notice issues that might affect their future together. Ben isn't out in the town he lives in. As a contractor, he works all over the place. His family knows he's gay but disapprove causing them to be alienated from each other. Josh's family accepts him and they are close. Josh is out and proud in every aspect of his life. When Ben is at Josh's house, they can be themselves and have a great time. But when Josh is at Ben's, he has to be in the closet. Josh isn't comfortable with that, but he tries to ignore it, not wanting to put pressure on Ben or put a damper on their great relationship. One thing Josh knows, he likes to visit Ben, but wouldn't want to live in the country. He enjoys living in the city where everything is available and he's close to his family. They need to talk about this, but neither one wants to bring it up. When Ben misjudges a situation with Josh, his insecurity and lack of communication leads him to jump to the wrong conclusions. Instead of waiting for a logical explanation, he assumes the worst and walks away.

This is a case where Josh and Ben could have avoided a lot of pain and anguish if they had just communicated more effectively. Trying to fill in the blanks and interpret feelings without verifying them is almost always a recipe for disaster. This is a well written story that endeared me to the characters very quickly, while wanting to knock their heads together a few times as well. Communication is the key! Josh and Ben are great guys and I was rooting for them to find a solution. Josh's friend, Dante, is outrageous in every sense of the word but he obviously loves Josh a lot. If you like hot men, steamy encounters, and views of country and city living, you may enjoy this story. Thanks, Jessica, for the entertaining read.

Wildflowers by Suki Fleet

Wildflowers - Suki Fleet

"In a bind that I can’t bend. No sleep for days on end, cause things went so badly. Words I wish I didn’t say. My brain got in the way and I am truly sorry. I want to take it back, undo what’s been done... I hope that you’ll forgive me. Maybe somewhat wiser now with my mistakes abound. Oh, I have loved you badly.” ~ Melanie Dekker

When Xavi left Sam behind five years ago, without being able to admit it, he also left behind a piece of his heart. It's just another of many mistakes and bad choices he's made in his life. Xavi gives his parents’ phone number in case Sam everneeds him, but is surprised when Sam turns up where Xavi works with a declaration and a request. Sam is dying and he wants Xavi to be with him when he does.

Xavi is overwhelmed but, whether through obligation or strong denial of his feelings, he tries his best to fulfill Sam's last request. Xavi and Sam travel aimlessly, looking for just the right spot; a field of flowers by the ocean for Sam's last resting place.

Xavi reflects on his time with Sam, painfully remembering his overwhelming desire for him along with the pain he has caused both of them in his ultimate rejection. In the past, love has meant nothing but pain; Xavi no longer believes it's possible to be in love without enduring the agony that may accompany it. Instead of responding to his intense feelings to be with Sam, he denies them and literally and figuratively speaking, runs from them, abandoning Sam to a life of loneliness and pain. Because of his hesitation to accept how he feels, Xavi is throwing the baby out with the bath water. Xavi senses how much love Sam needs and he's terrified that he can't live up to his expectations. Instead of sorting out his feelings, forgiving himself for his inadequacies, and moving forward, he does what he's always done - he runs from them.

This is a profound, beautifully written story that often brought me to tears. Suki twisted the emotion out of me as she clearly demonstrated Xavi's predicament. She also made me want to smack Xavi for his inability to see what was right in front of him! Sam had my heart aching with his desperate last attempt to be with the man he loves, even though he had been rejected by him. Sam was resolved that he was going to die and almost welcomed it since he had nothing to live for. Sam wanted Xavi to be with him to share one of the most intimate times of his life. The fact that Xavi so readily agreed to go with him should have been a big flag, telling Xavi how much Sam meant to him; but it took seeing that he was loosing Sam forever to shake him up enough to see that they were both out of time and it was now or never.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper story with more to it than a simple romance, reminding us of the fragility of life, the importance of forgiveness, and the sanctity of love. Thanks, Suki. You took my breath away.

Rockin' it Forever by Morticia Knight

Rockin' it Forever (What's His Passion?) - Morticia Knight

“The flood of tears won’t stop, the flow of fears won’t quit. You’re on my mind and in my dreams. The years of hurt won’t go, the terror of night comes back. You’re in my heart and in my soul. We’ve had too many lifetimes to lose love’s light. Why would we even want to try?” ~ Aubrey King (Bryan's Song)

Bryan Gallagher gets a lot more than he bargains for when he agrees to help rock star Aubrey King write his memoirs. Brian has idolized Aubrey since he was a teenager. It's a dream come true to have the opportunity to work with him; he never expected to end up in Aubrey's bed, especially since Bryan considers himself to be straight. Yet, there is something about Aubrey that is intoxicating; being with him just feels...right. Bryan can't imagine how they will be able to maintain their relationship, but he has faith that, with Aubrey by his side, they will find a way to make it work.

Aubrey is thrilled when Bryan agrees to work with him. He's had his eye on Bryan for some time, following his work as a music journalist and wants to meet him. Writing Aubrey's memoirs seems a perfect way to make it happen. Even Aubrey is surprised when he and Bryan click so quickly. Aubry never dreamed that Bryan, who he thought was straight, is so easily seduced; Aubrey is thrilled. Aubrey knows how quickly and deeply he falls in love, and tries his best to take his time and keep the intensity level down. Bryan is more cautious, especially since feelings for a man are so new to him. Since Aubrey needs to stay in the closet, their relationship has to be kept a secret. The men think that won't be a problem, but it turns out to be bigger than either of them had anticipated.

They think they are doing a good job of keeping it secret, but as one of the band members explains, all anyone has to do is look at their faces when they look at each other to know they are in love. After Aubrey reluctantly confides in Bryan about his shady past, Bryan reassures Aubrey that he won't hold what has happened against him. But there is one more thing Aubrey hasn't told Bryan, or anyone else for that matter, but convinces himself that it's not the right time. This omission comes back to haunt him when Bryan overhears a conversation in which Aubrey discusses the 'forbidden' subject. Knowing that Aubrey is still being untruthful, makes Bryan doubt everything else Aubrey has said; the trust between them is broken. For Bryan, it isn't something that could easily be fixed. It would take a miracle.

Some people have to lose someone before they truly appreciate what they meant to them. The key to a successful relationship is honesty. If a couple isn't truthful with each other; if they let their fear overrule being honest, they don't have good communication. Without it, love can't survive. If you like stories about rockers, their chaotic life style, and the necessity of being truthful, then you may enjoy this story. Thanks, Morticia, for a rockin' good story.

Misinformation - Keelan Ellis

“The lowest form of popular culture - lack of information, misinformation, disinformation, and a contempt for the truth or the reality of most people's lives - has overrun real journalism. Today, ordinary Americans are being stuffed with garbage.”  ~ Carl Bernstein

When his ex-wife moves to New York City, taking their daughter with them, Ethan Daniels, of 'Misinformation' by Keeland Ellis, makes a less than desirable career choice in order to be near her. Working as host of ECHO, an ultra conservative television program, he's forced to host despicable, toxic people, who are promoting agendas that are both negative and harmful. Ethan tries hard to be neutral, but week after week of dealing with this type of agenda is wearing him down. He feels trapped, but the idea of leaving and not being near his daughter is a thought he can't entertain. Ethan knows he can't do this much longer; something has got to give.

When Ethan becomes attracted to Charlie Woods, things get even more complicated. Although he's attracted to men, Charlie has never acted upon those desires, but there's something about Charlie that pushes all of Ethan’s buttons. Even with that, Ethan hesitates to act upon his feelings and he and Charlie have a very frustrating time of it going back and forth trying to decide whether it is a good idea or not. They also have a completely different idea of what they want in a relationship; whether it is to be casual or serious. Since Homosexuality is one of the biggest topics on Ethan's show, being in a same-sex relationship makes it even more difficult for Ethan to remain neutral in the interviews he has on his show.

Charlie is good hearted, loves kids, and is a great school teacher. He's also stubborn and disillusioned about a relationship lasting for any length of time. When he hooks up with Ethan he never expects to fall in love with him. He thinks that Ethan's closeted status will keep him from having romantic complications, but soon has to admit he's wrong. Charlie's feelings for Ethan are too strong for it to be casual. Ethan's job is a big bone of contention between them. Ethan explains that just because he works there doesn't mean he believes what his often undesirable guests and the station management think and say. Charlie finds it hard to believe he can work there and not compromise himself. Ethan disagrees with him at first, but later has to admit that it's getting more difficult to stay silent. But Ethan's contract is coming up for renewal and he doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize that.

Even though there is lots of right-wing chaos swirling throughout the story, there isn't a great deal of angst. However, there is a lot of hot sex between Ethan and Charlie that is made even more special since Charlie was Ethan's first. Ethan was a fast learner and shared many passionate, sensual interludes with Charlie. They had good chemistry both in and out of bed. I appreciated how Ethan took responsibility for his mistakes and did the best he could to rectify them. I loved that he and his ex-wife, Deidra, had such a good relationship, especially when it came to Fiona, but in other ways too. There was a lot of history between them and it would have been a shame to throw it all away. Often, she may have been bossy, but gave Ethan a shoulder to cry on when he needed her.

If you like stories about listening to your conscience, doing the right thing, facing your fears, and holding on to those you love, you may enjoy this book. Thanks, Keeland, for bringing two wonderful men together.

Priddy's Tale by Harper Fox

Priddy's Tale - Harper Fox

"When you change your thoughts, and what you believe about what's possible for you, you change everything, including your physiology." - Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

If not for his best friend, Kit, Priddy, from Harper Fox's 'Priddy's Tale', would have been totally lost with no one to care about him and no hope of ever having more than he does right now. All of his life, Priddy has been told that he will never amount to anything and Priddy grows to believe it. Therefore, Priddy exerts little effort into anything he does since he expects to fail anyway. Priddy has little sense of self-preservation as well since he has little to look forward to. At least Kit offers affection and friendship although it's not enough to keep him out of sticky situations, like the night he fries his brains with bad drugs.

Priddy was fragile before, but he is even worse after his overdose. He's unsure of what's going on around him and what will become of him now. He's on medication that helps him function and keeps his hallucinations at bay. Priddy tries to carry on the best he can, holding on to little hope that he will be able to recover. When Kit tells Priddy he's going away to university, Priddy is sad, because, at one time, they dreamed of going together, but he's happy for Kit to be able to follow his dream even if he can't.

Kit encourages Priddy to take the job he now has tending the automated lighthouse, thinking that it will give him a place to live and the solitude he needs to heal. Priddy takes the job and tries to be satisfied; sometimes he thinks that he's a bit better but other days he feels like he's even worse. One stormy night, Priddy rescues a man from a shipwreck. His name is Merou and he's the most beautiful man Priddy has ever seen. Yet, he soon discovers that Merou may also be one of the oddest. For a shipwrecked man, Merou is acting awfully relaxed. He begins asking lots of odd questions. Merou also knows what Priddy is thinking, accepting him for who he is while asking both literally and figuratively if that's where he wants to remain. This hurts Priddy, but it also makes him think about his condition. As strange as things are with  Merou there, Priddy becomes quite attached to him and misses him when he goes away for a few days.

Most of all, he begins to accept what Merou says about him. Priddy starts to believe the fantastical things Merou tells and shows him, even when Merou reveals that he's a merman with special talents. The way Priddy accepts these improbably realities, opens up something inside of him and makes him wonder if, just maybe, he can have more faith in himself as well. With a granted wish from Merou that Priddy earned by saving a sea creature and a lot of hard work on his own, including refusing drugs when his old dealer comes to tempt Priddy with them, something blooms inside of him that has lain dormant for a long time. There seem to be no limits to what he can do, only an infinite array of choices he can make. All he has to do is believe in himself and reach for them.

Although written in the lyrical language and style of a fairy tale, Harper has also managed to include a moral lesson as often found in an allegory. Although laced with mythical creatures and awesome sea castles, ‘Priddy’s Tale’ is the story of a man who got lost, but, through the kindness and encouragement of a merman, was able to pull himself out of his misery, heal himself, and become who he was destined to be. In this way, it's the most believable, although fantastical story I've ever read. Harper's ability to wrap these elements together is brilliant. If you love lost souls, lighthouses, mermen, and finding redemption in becoming yourself, you may like this story. Thanks, Harper, for helping Priddy find his way.

Buried Secrets - Hank Edwards

Nothing makes us so lonely as our secrets.” ~ Paul Tournier

Bryson Franklin, of 'Buried Secrets' by Hank Edwards, hasn't had an easy life. His alcoholic parents resented him because he is the reason they ended up in a loveless, destructive marriage. Bryson tries not to believe the messages he receives from his parents, that he's not good enough and doesn't deserve to be happy. The only love and nurturing Bryson ever receives is when he comes to his grandparents’ farm to stay for the summer. When they die, Bryson inherits their farm, giving Bryson a chance to start over in a place where he's felt safe and loved. Bryson might be leaving the city behind, but he brings his negative, self-defeating image with him. Unless Bryson can learn to love himself, he will continue to feel unworthy of anything good that may come his way.

Being at his grandparents' farm brings with it a sense of peace he's not felt in years. The townspeople loved and respected his grandparents and many of them remember Bryson from when he stayed with them in the summer. Even the town deputy sheriff, Sam LeClaire. is kind to him and more friendly than he needs to be. Yet, Bryson's inner voice tells him that Sam couldn't possibly be interested in him and dismisses the positive signals he gives Bryson. When he meets Daniel, it's immediately obvious that Daniel is the town's “bad boy” so his inner voice reasons that it's okay for him to be with Daniel, no matter how badly he treats him. Bryson figures he doesn't deserve anything better. Though Bryson is unhappy with Daniel's behavior, he still doesn't have the resolve to end it, reasoning that even negative attention is better than none at all. Bryson's self-defeating attitude causes him to be lulled into Daniel's web of deceit and permit his manipulative behavior, with it going far beyond what Bryson would ever dream of doing. Before he knows it, Bryson is in way over his head. After a tragic incident, Daniel's hold on Bryson is tighter than ever and they are bonded with a secret so terrible, it threatens to destroy him.

Sam isn't happy that Bryson is involved with Daniel because he knows what kind of a man he is. Sam likes Bryson and he's always been a good judge of character. He thinks that Bryson is a good man who deserves someone better for him than Daniel could ever be. Sam wants to be that man. He stands back and watches as Bryson becomes tangled in Daniel's web, but Bryson is so secretive that Sam doesn't know exactly what is going on. When Sam sees Bryson has pulled away from Daniel, he takes a chance and invites Bryson for coffee. At first Bryson can't believe it, but he accepts. They have an enjoyable time together, Sam knows something is bothering Bryson, but he has no idea that he is desperately trying to keep a horrible secret. When Bryson doesn't continue to keep in touch with him, Sam is disappointed but not deterred. There's something about Bryson that attracts Sam to him and he's not going to give up on him until he's absolutely sure Bryson isn't interested.

This is a very intense, character-driven story filled with lots of unexpected twists and turns. I knew that there was more to it than I was being told and slowly, but surely, began to piece the clues together that Hank so expertly interspersed throughout the action. Hank did a marvelous job of capturing the emotions of his characters, especially Bryson. I don't think I've cheered for someone so much in a while, but Bryson was such a tragic figure, yet obviously, deep down, a good man. Although his thinking was somewhat twisted, due to his parents' neglect and disdain, Bryson wanted to do the right thing. He just didn't always know what that was, especially for himself. Sam was a great guy who I loved immediately. I wanted Sam and Bryson to get together, even after it seemed very unlikely that they would do so. If you enjoy stories with strong characters, great writing, mystery, suspense, and intrigue, you may enjoy this book. Thanks so much, Hank, for the intense reading experience.

Island Counselor (Island Medics #2) by Sue Brown

Island Counselor (Island Medics Book 2) - Sue Brown

“Just off the coast of England you'll see a charming sight, a little pile of mud and sand we call the Isle of Wight...We've a strong sense of community and we're neighborly to the core. Whatever your business is, it's not private any more. You never need to be alone, whatever you do, behind that white lace curtain there's an eyeball watching you.” ~ Laurie Say and the Island Folk (It's the Isle of Wight for Me)

Although sung in jest, the small-town mentality of the Isle's people, is one of its charms. Logan Wilde grows to appreciate that about the Isle of Wight. Logan has come to get away from the chaos in the big city and a terrifying attempt on his life. He finds solace in the peace, beauty, and slower pace of the Isle, as well as a surprisingly strong connection with Nick Brent. Logan isn't one to believe in love at first sight but in an attempt to enjoy his life instead of letting it pass him by, Logan allows himself to follow his feelings and see where they lead him.

Logan runs to the Isle trying to overcome the horrible experience of almost dying at the hands of one of his clients’ husband. Logan hasn't told anyone on the Isle that he's there, not even his best friend, Jeff, the island's doctor. Soon enough Jeff discovers he's there and chastises him first, for not letting him know and secondly, for not seeking out help for his PTSD. Almost overnight, Logan has more support, protection, and company than he's ever had before in his life. Between Nick's “loving possessiveness” and the package deal of Owens family, Logan doesn't know what to think. He is usually the one caring for others; he's uncomfortable with things being the other way around. He soon learns that resistance is futile as far as accepting help is concerned. Logan has been officially adopted into the clan and may as well relax and let them do what they do best: stick together and take care of themselves and those 'under their influence'.

It takes some doing, but Logan comes to the conclusion that the Isle is his home now and he never wants to go back to his old life; he is looking forward to creating a new one by staying on the island with Nick and his newly “earned” friends. Unfortunately, Logan's peace of mind is shattered when he learns that the man who attempted to kill him has escaped from jail. Logan is terrified by the possibility of the man coming to finish him off, he panics, and all attempts to reassure him fall on deaf ears. Logan doesn't think anyone can keep that mad man away from him; that he will come and finish off the job he started regardless of what anyone tries to do about it.

It was absolutely wonderful to revisit the Isle of Wight and its deliciously eccentric inhabitants. More than ever, I want to go there. The relationship between Nick and Logan deepened very suddenly, but, somehow it didn't feel that way. It was great seeing Jeff, Liam, and the other friends and family members and feeling the strength of commitment and care they have for each other and how it automatically 'encompasses' those brought into the flock. Sue did a great job portraying Logan's emotions and his progression toward overcoming his fears and moving on. Fans of the 'Island Medics' series will enjoy this intriguing addition to the series. For those of you new to the series, you are missing something special and enjoyable. If you like learning about different customs and cultures, love between handsome men, and family loyalty, you may enjoy this book. Thanks, Sue, for another wonderful book in the ‘Island Medics’ series. I hope to enjoy many more visits to this magical place.

Karma (Cattle Valley Book 33) by Carol Lynne

Karma (Cattle Valley Book 33) - Carol Lynne

“You have to learn to love yourself before you can love someone else. Because it's only when we love ourselves that we feel worthy of someone else's love.” ~ Alyssa B. Sheinmel, 'Faceless'

When Guy wakes up in the hospital, the last person he expects to see at his bedside is Shane Rendell. He'd treated Shane badly after their short affair, then sent him packing. Although Guy's abrupt dismissal broke Shane's heart, he'd had a glimpse of the man beneath the mask of indifference and sarcasm. Shane sees the good in Guy and decides to help Guy see himself the way Shane does.

Putting up with Guy's rude demeanor, Shane stays by Guy through his convalescence, even paying for some of Guy's medical bills to ensure he has the best care. All the while, Guy is suspicious of Shane's motives, doubting his every suggestion or action, but he's unable to find any. Shane even buys half of Guy's ski lodge and manages it while Guy is serving a jail sentence for a DUI charge. Guy ran Riley off the road, seriously injuring him, but at least not causing his death. Among many other serious injuries, the accident caused Guy to lose his leg, ending his skiing days for good. When Guy gets out of jail, thanks to Shane, he has somewhere to go.

Shane has been working on building up business for the ski lodge, making arrangements with local vendors and businesses to promote exposure and provide the lodge with improved amenities. Shane sets Guy up in one of the cabins and makes sure that everything is handicapped accessible. Shane gives Guy room to think about how different his life can be if he can stop hating himself, ask forgiveness of the people he's wronged, and, most important, stay sober and let himself see the goodness in him that Shane sees. Shane has deep feelings for Guy and would love it if they could have a relationship, but if Guy can turn his life around, he will settle for just being good friends.

I definitely remember Guy from before and wondered why someone would act the way he did. I had a feeling there was a story behind what made him the way he was. When he finally confided in Shane, I did see him in a different light, but it would be a stretch to say he's redeemed himself in my eyes. I like Shane and wonder, especially coming from a background of having alcoholics in his family, why he would put himself in a similar situation, but on the other hand, he would also know what to expect and how to deal with the problems that come with the territory. He has the patience of a saint, maybe too much, especially for Guy after the way he treated Shane. I'd say that Guy doesn't deserve him, but that's not my judgement to make. Everyone deserves a second chance, even Guy.

At eighty-eight pages, 'Karma' is not a long story, but Carol managed to put a lot of emotion into it. Guy and Shane are interesting characters and it seems are now on the right track, but I would like to have had more resolution. However, I also realize there may be more of their story revealed in the future. If you aren't already a Cattle Valley fanatic, like me, who has read all thirty-three books, I don't know if there is enough background information to read it as a stand-alone. Thanks, Carol, for giving Guy and Shane a second chance.

'Beauty Inc.' by Tara Lain

Beauty, Inc. (Pennymaker Tales Book 3) - Tara Lain

“There's something sweet and almost kind but he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined and now he's dear and so unsure, wonder why I didn't see it there before. New and a bit alarming. Who'd have ever thought that this could be? True that he's no Prince Charming, but there's something in him that I simply didn't see.”  ~ Disney - (Something There) Beauty and the Beast

When Dr. Robert “Belle” Belleterre, of 'Beauty, Inc.' by Tara Lain, meets Magnus Strong, he is not impressed. Magnus is everything Belle dislikes in a man: arrogant, controlling, entitled, and cold. The last thing Belle wants is to work for the man. Unfortunately, due to his father's carelessness, Belle is forced to do exactly that.

In order for his father to keep his company, Belle has an obligation to work for Magnus, but he's determined to do as little as possible. Belle is not sure what Magnus's motives are, but he's convinced they are nefarious. However, Belle is surprised when he is given a beautiful luxury apartment, a driver, his own office, and, most amazing of all, complete access to all projects at the company. Even with all of this, Belle can't help but be suspicious. It just doesn't make sense for Magnus to be so considerate. Despite himself, Belle gets involved in projects at Beauty, Inc. and finds he's enjoying himself, especially when introduced to Magnus's many philanthropic programs. Belle never expected Magnus to be so considerate and sensitive; it throws him for a loop. As Belle discovers more about the man, he starts to question whether his first impression of Magnus was correct.

Belle's new life at Beauty, Inc. is a far cry from the cold atmosphere Belle grew up in where his father and brothers basically ignored or took him for granted, that is, until they had a problem and needed him to fix it. In New York, Belle has great neighbors and friends who truly care about him, a company in which he can thrive, and Magnus, whom Belle is not only attracted to, but whom Belle realizes is definitely not the man he thought he was. Belle begins to see beyond Magnus's scarred face and into his heart. Belle thinks of him as handsome rather than ugly and never wants him to change a thing. Now, all Belle has to do is convince Magnus.

Tara has taken a well-known Disney story and retold it with a modern twist. It's just as delightful as the animated 'Beauty and the Beast' if not more so. Magnus Strong is a magnificent Beast, ferocious outside and a heart of gold inside. Tara’s Belle is definitely a departure from Disney’s Belle, but just as beautiful inside and out, and a lot more 'naughty'. Belle didn't give up on Magnus no matter how difficult he became, just as Disney’s Belle did with a similar outcome. The Beast was not a beast at all. Magnus, like Beast, was a tortured soul, caught in the past and doomed to stay there until someone could see his real heart. If you like fairy tales, life lessons, overcoming misconceptions, sleazy villains, good friends, and a happy ending, you may enjoy this tale. Thank you, Tara, for bringing one of my favorite animated stories to life.

Bad Dogs and Drag Queens Julie Lynn Hayes

Bad Dogs and Drag Queens (Rose and Thorne Book 1) - Julie Lynn Hayes

“It is true that you can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends. It is also true that you can choose your partner and in doing so, you end up choosing the family you've always wanted.” ~ J.R. Rim

Vinnie and Ethan, of 'Bad Dogs and Drag Queens' by Julie Lynn Hayes, are partners in the truest sense of the word; at work, as undercover law enforcement detectives, and in their private lives as lovers and best friends. Their lives as detectives can get hectic and even dangerous sometimes, but the respect, love, and devotion these men have for each other make them an unstoppable team—ready, willing, and able to take on the toughest assignments and solve the most difficult cases.

Their current assignment is catching muggers in a badly lit part of Roanoke, Virginia. Vinnie is, unfortunately, the bait, necessitating him to wear female clothing, which Ethan lovingly helps him pick out and put on. While at the park, they meet an adorable dog who is also a purse thief. When he steals Vinnie's purse, the chase leads to the real purse snatcher, therefore solving the case. With the perpetrator in custody, Vinnie and Ethan leave the station with the dog they name Benny, who they end up keeping, looking forward to going back home to Richmond, Virginia where they live. In the meantime, their supervisor asks them to meet him for dinner to discuss the next case. This uncommon invitation arouses Vinnie and Ethan's suspicion; they figure the upcoming assignment must be particularly noxious and, more than likely means that no one else would take it.

Their suspicions are confirmed when they learn that the job involves working at The Stroll, a local gay bar featuring drag queens, whose employees are being harassed and threatened. Their job is to find out who is doing it. It also involves Ethan being a bartender and poor Vinnie, a drag queen. Vinnie is upset, but Ethan is supportive, helping Vinnie shop for new dresses, wigs, and shoes that are necessary for his cover and reassuring him how beautiful he looks in a dress. Ethan and Vinnie are supposed to be roommates, not lovers, so they have to curb their public displays of affection. It's especially difficult for Vinnie, who has a short temper and whose jealousy is easily invoked. He almost loses it when he sees Ethan being too friendly with the other queens and patrons.

I loved this story! Ethan and Vinnie won my heart right away. Julie presents their relationship so articulately that I could feel their passion and affection for each other. Everyone should have a man like Ethan. He knows just how to soothe any misgivings or fears Vinnie has with just the right words and actions while reminding him how wonderful he is. Vinnie repays him with undying love and devotion and a lot of hot sex! If you like stories about drag queens, handsome, witty men, undercover agents, sleazy bad guys, dogs, and hot, loving sex, then you may enjoy this tale. I'm delighted to see that it's book one of a series. I'm just not ready to let these guys go yet. Thanks, Julie, this story was a true delight. I'm looking forward to Ethan and Vinnie's next adventures.

Dear Stranger by Sis Love

Dear Stranger - Sid Love

It's easy enough to misread someone's intentions when you are sighted, but Reggie, of Sid Love's 'Dear Stranger', is at a disadvantage because he's blind. When a stranger comes on to him, he's skeptical and scared, but there's something about the man that gives him pause. Whether it's his gentle touch, sexy voice, or flattery, Reggie throws caution to the wind and goes home with him.

Knowing it's going to be a sexual encounter, Reggie's feelings go from excited to nervous and back. Even though he can't see the stranger, he can feel the handsome face and muscular body. The sex is explosive and carnal, but through it all, the stranger is beyond considerate of Reggie's emotional and physical state, checking with him several times to make sure he is doing okay. Afterward, he walks Reggie back home and tells him that he's looking forward to seeing him again.

Reflecting on what took place with the stranger, Reggie, whose self-confidence isn't the greatest, freaks out. A few weeks later Reggie is out with his best friend when he hears a voice that he instantly recognizes, his stranger's voice. The stranger is upset and lets Reggie know that it wasn't a once off, that he really intended to see Reggie again, that he was worried about him when he wasn't on the train. But now that he finds out Reggie is deliberately avoiding him, he's angry and hurt. Reggie tries to apologize but to no avail. Their encounter ends with the stranger telling him: “I'll see you around.”

Reggie's blindness puts a unique and intriguing twist on his sexual encounter. Since he can't read body language, he has to depend on his senses of touch, taste, and smell. By touching the stranger Reggie can tell he's muscular and handsome; can feel the cool sheets, and judge the size of his penis. Reggie can also smell his aftershave and taste his sweat and semen. Sid did a great job of reminding me that Reggie couldn't see without making his lack of sight a complete disadvantage, creating a sensual and sensitive coupling. If you enjoy stories about sex with strangers, blindness, angst, and reconciliation, you may like this story. Thanks, Sid, for a short but entertaining tale.
